Shape of Water

Film begins with the narrator’s preface, which prepares us for the “fabulousness” of story.
And its not without a reason. “Shape of Water” truly just like a fairy tale, with all the ensuring consequences.

“Shape of Water” is the kind of films that takes you into its world, a magical, incredible and fabulous world. You are not t trying to predict everything in advance, you’re just THERE, you fell good yourself and interested in what is happening on the screen. “Shape of Water” is filmed with a huge LOVE of cinematography, that it feels so, it feels good.

To watch this film is like to hear a very magnificent and exciting story from a very charismatic, wise and pleasant narrator. Such magic can’t be repeated. While writing this text, I put music on background, the soundtrack from the movie, “A Princess Without a Voice” and “Without You”, and involuntarily caught myself thinking that I really want to review and again plunge into this wonderful story. Don’t really know if that is going to work the second time, but it’s worth a try.

“Shape of Water” – is a true fairy tale, by remembering which you involuntarily start to smile. The magic of cinema in the “Purest shape of it”. Oscar to Del Toro for directing this movie, and for the film of the year wasn’t given without a reason. The movie is truly great and amazing.

Get Out

“Get out” is a good movie, made by all of the traditional old Hitchcock’s thrillers movie. Suspense works here in a high level, that it makes you presses tightly to the chair. As I think, the voltage depends not only on a good directing, but also it depends on the characters of the film. All the reactions are real and timely, there is no stupid actions made by main characters. Bravo! Long time passed since we had a triller with a real and living people in!

The final act of the tense of Hitchcock goes into a bloody Cronenberg’s movies like, which only adds buzz to the watching process. “Get Out” is a very atmospheric thriller, with a carefully prescribed characters, with a good humor and powerful acting performances. A good movie that is not ashamed to advise to everyone.

Stranger Things (2 season)

First season was a real feast for every geek. Dozens of cult movie quotes and movie references, plus the atmosphere of the eighties and powerful castes, of course. However, I can’t stand by the stories about growing up, becoming adult and believe that the series was kind of overpraise.
But the second season hit right into my heart. The serial itself has grownup, attention switched from children, now lees attention is pay to them. The budget has obviously grown, because of the success of the first season, the story has become darker, the picture is more beautiful, and the acting level had grown sharply. In the first season actor who play Will’s character was not enough, that’s why the talent of the actor was’t shown. But from the second season I can for sure say that Noah Schnapp is really good.

Separately want to highlight the MUSIC. It’s damn good this time. Too good. It is incredibly beautiful, it penetrates directly under the skin, gets to your heart and settles in the shower. THE ENDING OF THE EIGHTH EPISODE! While I’m writing this I got goosebumps. That scene. Oh God! When the screen went out, fade out, cue music… Then the goosebumps, weeping, hysterics came on. I turned into a 14-year-old little girl at that time. And I thought, if the series can give me this kind of emotions, that’s already my favorite series.

True Detective

It just happened so that, to start a conversation about new season of the best series on the planet, you have to start from afar. And you can not avoid it, because you need to build an understanding of how the interlocutor refers to the “True Detective”. To save your time I just want to say that, I love all three seasons with all of my heart. If you’re okay with that, let’s move feather, if not stop reading its post right now. Ok, let’s go. I will try to describe the third season without major spoilers, but still want warn you in case if you haven’t see it yet.

At an early stages, when the cast was announced — it was clear that the Director of the serial is mainly focused on the story itself. No famous actors, to not mislead the audience, no Hollywood ladies’ man like Colin Farrell and Matthew McConaughey. Mahershala Ali and Steven Dorf were taken chosen for their charismatics and talents.

“True detective 3” is the same “tabloid detective about people and their relationships”, but the accent mainly goes in direction of the relationship.

The End Of The F***ing World

Absolutely unexpected surprise. Well what can I say? Brits, one love. As always, it’s classy, atmospheric, boldly, funny, bloody, vulgar, sad and soulful. Brits have always surprised me like, how they manage to reveal such queer and not so pleasant characters, but at the same time forcing the audience to empathize to them. It consists only of eight episodes, and each episode’s timing is about twenty minutes.

Two main characters are outsiders. The boy believes that he is a psychopathic killer, and the girl is a typical problem teenager. It all starts like in the J. D. Salinger’s book “Catcher in the rye”, and ends with a light version of “Natural Born Killers”.

The Danish Girl

I was watching this movie and that in one moment I realized that this is such a magnificent movie. Like you are visiting and walking around an Art Gallery. “The Danish Girl” is such an aesthetically beautiful film. Most of the frames are arranged in the way that it makes you to want to stop (pause) and look at every detail of the shot. And every of this freeze frames could become an art illustrations and be hanged in some art museum.

According to my age and life experience, perhaps, I am not able to feel all the spector emotions and sensation which are included in this film. But right at the beginning I understood that the film is not about Einar/Lily (Eddie Redmayne‘s character), and mostly about Gerda his wife, with sacrifice and her endless love for her husband. Gerda’s character contains so many contradictory, subtle and vivid emotions that only women are able to fully feel. For such we (men) are too primitive and rational.

Gerda and her story is the soul and heart of the picture. And without her the film would be just like general films, about how difficult it is to accept your own inner nature. At the end, I just wanted to add that, it is difficult to ignore that “The Danish Girl” is a very subtle, sensual and beautiful film, about the sacrifices people are willing to make for the sake of those whom they truly love.

Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese wasn’t joking when he said that his neo-noir psychological thriller “Shutter Island” would be doubly profitable, because viewers would have to watch it at least twice to understand the ending. Indeed, its very difficult to understand the film from the first time, you’ll desire to watch it second time. And the atmosphere of the film literally blows the mind. And it’s not only because of a brilliant and unpredictable plot, but also due to the characters themselves, camera work andcomposition.

Yes, the film is certainly unpredictable, but in fact, on the second viewing you start to notice the clues left by the filmmaker literally in every frame. The film makes us feel as crazy as the main character, even seeing all the pieces of the puzzle, we refuse to accept them as long as we do not poke the truth in the face.

Dumbo (1941)

Today, we will discuss the cartoon “Dumbo”. Yeah, that exact elephant, an alcoholic elephant. We know Dumbo from Disney’s cartoon, but as it turned out, not the whole story about a little elephant is a fiction.

So let’s see where it all started.

It was 1941, a very special time, as you know. Walt Disney made his fourth cartoon at that time. And it was about this ugly duckling, or rather elephant. Except, it was shot in a hurry and in a very interesting way. Drawing is very simplified, because the money, at that time, was scarce, so Dumbo had to be left without a voice. And for the entire cartoon Dumbo did not say a word.

Well, the facts have been listed, and now I would like to explain to you why this cartoon have to be shown very carefully among today’s children. Since the cartoon in fact is very cruel.

Remember, there is a sufferer Dumbo, who is humiliated and ridiculed. There’s a Mother who gets beaten up. There is an attempt to become someone and eternal failure. Yes, there is a glisten of hope and even some friendships. But all of the positive things happiness only after the binges.
And what do we have on the results? Dambo, translated as fool, gets drunk and everything in his life gets better. With friends and circus etc.

Watch the cartoon yourself again, before showing it to your child or younger brother/sister. Because perhaps you have only good memories left to this cartoon. This is the effect that makes us think that everything that was in our childhood is better, than things today, and this is what is called cognitive distortion. And perhaps it is this effect affects on our memories towards cartoons of old times. And before showing the cartoon to the younger generation, you should review the cartoons yourself. And see, are they that good?

The Great Gatsby

One of the most exciting movies of my life. The plot in general, have always been dissolved me in itself. All the moments with shy Gatsby, the past of main characters about falling in love — it’s all seems so alive, in the background of surrealism… Every time you rewatch the movie, you revise new angles of views of the same story. And this is the exact unique feature of the film.

But let me be honest with you guys, I haven’t reviewed it in years. So I forgot most of the scenes, and all I remembered was the universal sadness on the credits of film, the magnificently beautiful visual, the hatred for Daisy and the amazing soundtrack.

it’s easy to hate Daisy and consider her as a heartless greedy fool. However, its biassed to blame only Daisy. Also the Gatsby himself has the responsibility for unhappy outcome of their relationship. If only he didn’t rush their relationships by wanting everything now and immediately” — perhaps the final story would have been different. Gatsby turned out to be just a fool, who on the phrase “I loved him and loved you too” completely broke down. Because in his idealized world of “pure love”, there is no understanding of that life is a complicated thing, and one person can truly love several people at the same time.

It may sound very pretentiously, but “Gatsby” tells us a very lively story, by talking about the complexity of human relationships.

You will have a sense of happiness throughout the film, and when the credits begin with the soundtrack “Together”, and you catch yourself still sitting in fear of moving and the emptiness permeates right to the bones. One of the most beautiful, sensual and musically remarkable films I have ever watched. That’s the power of cinema. This is the power of love.

LA LA LAND

Mia & Sebastian’s Theme

I knew its going to be beautiful, with a perfect screen picture, actors, music and mood of the film. But what i didn’t even realize and think of was that, besides the beautiful picture, the film will also have unbelievably remarkable story.

Seems like Damien Chazelle has come a long way to make films. Firstly it was his debut masterpiece “Whiplash” about dreams and persistence, and now his new film “La La Land” on the same topic. I guess, Damien Chazelle really understands the dreamers and creative people, because he is also a part of them.

Back in 2014, after watching Chazelle’s film “Whiplash”, I asked myself  – is Damien a real genius or a film about a drummer is just a lucky coincidence? But, I no longer need an answer, because everything is clear now. Somehow, the young Director made his second movie a live classic.

This is a true love confession for cinema, and we are lucky to see exact in this time. And this movie must become a classic for sure. I can not find the words, just go and watch the movie yourself and experience the magic of the film yourself.
Well I am leaving you here, I’m going to turn on the “City of Stars” for a thousandth time.
